News: NYC Subway Motorman Suffers Fatal Heart Attack While Operating Train
Domenick Occhiogrosso, a subway motorman suffered a fatal heart attack while operating the G Train on Wednesday morning. He had just pulled the train Domenick Occhiogrosso had just pulled the train out of the Court Square station in Long Island City, Queens, when he had the attack (shortly after 8 am). No passengers were injured because of NYC subway trains’ “Dead-Man” feature. In the motorman’s cab there is a metal arm that is a few inches long called the controller. In order to set the train in motion, the operator had to press down on the controller arm with several pounds of pressure, swivels it and holds on. If the motorman lets go of the controller, the emergency brakes are applied. So when Mr. Occhiogrosso suffered the fatal heart attack the train stopped.
The conductor noticed that he was unconscious and radioed for help. Mr. Occhiogrosso, 50, of Bath Beach, Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Center at 9:20 a.m., officials said.
