Jennifer Hudson Sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

September 30th, 2009 cherryconnect

The 70th Anniversary of the The Wizard of Oz celebration took place yesterday at Central Park in New York City. Netflix hosted a free live concert and movie screening of the classic 1939 film. Jennifer Hudson closed the show with a performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Her rendition of the song had a soulful, gospel feel to it. Thoughts?

A Nightmare on Elm Street Trailer

September 30th, 2009 cherryconnect

Nightmare

It looks like Freddy is back! I’m a Freddy Krueger fan but I’m not jumping out of my seat for this remake. Sorry folks but Robert Englund is NOT playing Freddy and I’m not sure if Jackie Earle Haley can measure up to him (I’m not really feeling Freddy’s “new” face). A lot of the scenes from the trailer are taken straight from the original or are very similar to them. The film is produced by Michael Bay (director of Transformers 1 & 2). I definitely plan on seeing the movie but sometimes originals should be left alone. What are your thoughts?

A Nightmare on Elm Street will hit theatres in April 2010.

Movie: Paranormal Activity

September 29th, 2009 cherryconnect

If you’re a horror flick fanatic like myself, then you’ve heard the buzz about a new movie called Paranormal Activity. Paranormal activity is about a couple who moves into a typical suburban “tract” starter house and during the night hours they are disturbed by an invisible “presence.”  The film cost around $14,000 to make and some are saying that it’s the new Blair Witch Project.

Since last weekend’s screenings sold out, Paramount agreed to release Paranormal Activity in 20 more cities this Friday. You can check out the official website and click on “Demand It” if you want the movie to come to a city near you. I can’t wait to watch it!

You can check out the trailer for the movie below.

Four Teens Arrested for Beating Death of 16 year old Derrion Albert

September 28th, 2009 cherryconnect

derrion albert

Derrion Albert was an innocent bystander who ended up in the middle of a street fight between two factions of students at his Fenger High School in Chicago, Illinois. Derrion was on his way to the bus stop when the fight broke out on the street. The two factions, one that lived near the Altgeld Gardens housing development and one in an area known as “The Ville,” began fighting after a shooting earlier that day that police called gang-related.

Here is how CNN reported the crime:

Albert was approached by 16-year-old Eric Carson and another unknown person, both members of the “The Ville” faction, said Tandra Simonton, spokesperson for the Cook County States Attorney.

Carson struck Albert in the head with a long wooden railroad tie, and the second person punched him in the face, Simonton said.

Albert was knocked unconscious by the blows for a short period, Simonton said, but gained consciousness and quickly tried to move from the escalating street fight.

“He gained consciousness and moved a few feet away, but as he was trying to get up, he was attacked by a second group,” Simonton said.

That group, made up of five members from the opposing faction, then took their shots at Albert, Simonton said.

He was struck in the head by Riley with a railroad tie, a rectangular piece of wood used as a base for railroad tracks, Simonton said.

Once Albert was on the ground again, Shannon was seen “stomping on his head repeatedly,” Simonton said.

Prosecutors charged Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, and fourth suspect, 17-year-old Eugene Bailey with first-degree murder.

I send my condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Derrion Albert. Please note that I’ve decided not to post the video on Cherry Connect. You can google it if you’re interested in watching the video.
